Sabah and Sarawak
Trip Planning & Itineraries
Sabah is known abroad mainly for its incredible natural features. There are gorgeous beaches to lie on and coral reefs to explore, birds, animals, trees and plants to seek out and a huge mountain to climb, Mt Kinabalu (13,435ft/4,095m), one of the highest yet most accessible mountains in Southeast Asia.
The name 'Borneo' has long meant magic to travelers, and if you skip Sarawak you'll miss something special. The state has superb national parks, one of the most pleasant cities in Asia and a diverse, thriving tribal culture whose hospitality to strangers is unmatched.
Suggested Itineraries: Sabah & Sarawak
Some 186mi (300km) northwest of Kota Kinabalu, Layang Layang is a tiny island surrounded by a coral atoll. It's an exclusive dive location and part of the famous (among divers, at least) Borneo Banks. Layang Layang has a growing reputation among divers as a good alternative to the wasted coral found in many other spots around Sabah.
Bako is Sarawak's oldest national park, protecting 10.4 sq mi (27 sq km) of an unspoiled promontory between the mouths of the Sarawak and Bako rivers. Bako is most famous for its wildlife and it's the best place in Sarawak to see the rare proboscis monkey.
