Romantic Salzburg in its glorious Austrian alpine setting is a city that lives well on its stomach. It’s crammed with top-quality restaurants that can be prohibitively pricey, but there are myriad ways of eating well and inexpensively in the city.

Salzburg has a long-standing café culture and the Altstadt (Old Town) in particular is brimming with enticing cafés; but chose carefully because some still come at a price – avoid Café Sacher. A reasonable option is bohemian Café Shakespeare near Mirabellplatz, where a decent Wiener Schnitzel is served among ever-changing art exhibitions.
