Before heading to the top, enter the lobby to admire the 1930s murals inside the tower's ground floor. The 26 murals tell the story of California history, with frescoes depicting the rise of the state's industry. Indeed, some of these left-leaning murals, many of which were painted by artists who studied under Diego Rivera, were considered controversial when the tower first opened.

Doing what: Walking Tour of Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach with Cable Car Ride and optional Alcatraz Ticket
It was awesome! We had the best tour guide, she was knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. The walking tour was timed perfectly. I wish we would have had more time to enjoy the views from Coit tower. Alcatraz is a must see and has beautiful views of the city.

Doing what: Walking Tour of Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach with Cable Car Ride and optional Alcatraz Ticket
the tour of fishermans wharf was very informative, the walking tour thru the north beach area and up the hills to coit tower, all wonderful but very tiring for an older traveler, Alcatraz was incredible and the audio tour hauntingly real.
Practical Info
Located in North Beach, Telegraph Hill is easily accessible by car and public transportation. It is a short bus ride to Coit Tower from the Fisherman's Wharf area or from Washington Square in North Beach. The parking lot at the top of the hill, however, is only accessible by one road: Telegraph Hill Boulevard via Lombard Street. Another way to access the tower is by walking up the wooden and concrete stairs and footpaths, called the Filbert Steps, which lead to the top of the hill from various directions. The walk, though steep, is actually quite beautiful.
