San Francisco is a great city to see by foot. Ranked as the nation’s second most walkable city by an independent research group, San Francisco has plenty of neighborhoods that are safe, fun, and offer much to entice the average passer-by. The City of Seven Hills is easily broken down into bite-sized chunks, and by walking you get to experience the city at a slower pace, and more up-close, than you would if you were taking an alternate method of transportation.

The Financial District and Embarcadero are two distinctly walkable neighborhoods within San Francisco. Start at the Embarcadero, grab a bite to eat and do a little shopping at the Ferry Building Marketplace, and make your way to Pier 15, which houses the Exploratorium, before continuing on to the famous Fisherman’s Wharf for a cup of clam chowder and a glimpse at the colony of sea lions who make the pier their home.

Nearby, the Financial District is home to some of the city’s best restaurants. Great for shopping and seeing the bustle of Market Street, the Financial District is also adjacent to two other fabulously walkable San Francisco neighborhoods – the Jackson Square Historic District and Chinatown. The Mission, the city’s Spanish speaking (and now hipster) neighborhood, and Haight-Ashbury, known for its role in the hippie movement, are also great ‘hoods for exploring on food.

If it’s views you’re after, be prepared to out in a little effort, as you’ll need to climb of the city’s massive hills (or at least ride a bus or cable car to the top). From neighborhoods like Nob Hill and viewpoints at Lands End and the Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll get sweeping views of the city and bay. All it takes is a little legwork.
