Alcatraz things to do

Just hearing "'Alcatraz," conjures up so many images, from movies to infamous prison escapes (attempts) to triathlons. One of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions, Alcatraz Island, plopped smack-dab in the middle of San Francisco Bay, was built in 1850 as a military installation and has had many lives since then.

Most visitors are drawn to its shores to peek into its storied past as a federal prison (1934-1963). Along with exploring the remnants of The Rock, its history is told via photos, multimedia and an unforgettable museum.

Meet the Alcatraz Birdman

During the 29 years it operated as a jail, The Rock was home to a motley crew of inmates. Notorious residents included Al 'Scarface' Capone, the brutal kingpin who dug his claws into Chicago's underworld in the '20s; George 'Machine Gun' Kelly, a kidnapper; and Bonnie and Clyde accomplice and bank robber Floyd Hamilton.

Robert Stroud, aka the Birdman of Alcatraz, is perhaps the most infamous, thanks to Burt Lancaster's portrayal of him in the 1962 film Birdman of Alcatraz. According to insiders, Stroud was no meek bird lover but a vicious, unrepentant killer.
