Day 1:  History in Colombia’s Oldest City

Start your trip in Santa Marta with a dose of history. This city, founded in 1525, is the oldest city in Colombia, and the historic center is perfect to explore on foot. In the morning take a walk around town to visit the Customs House (La Casa de la Aduana), the Santa Marta Cathedral and the Tayrona Gold Museum. Take some time to get a bite to eat at one of the restaurants surrounding the Parque de los Novios. In the afternoon relax at one of the beautiful beaches surrounding Santa Marta. El Rodadero is one of the most famous, where you can also pick up some souvenirs. In the evening try one of the many restaurants that serve Colombian food, find out about the influence of Arabic cuisine on the local culture, or try an Italian or Spanish establishment.

Day 2: Liberators and beaches

Continue the route of history with a visit to Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino to learn more about the historical figure Simon Bolivar at this house where he spent his last days. Take a look at South American art at the museum on the grounds, and stroll around the gardens. In the afternoon head over to Taganga, a quiet fisherman’s town 15 minutes from Santa Marta, for a swim at the beach and to watch the sun set. Enjoy some of the best nightlife in the area where you can dance under the stars on the beach.

Day 3: Day trips

There’s plenty to see near Santa Marta. Explore ancient ruins on hikes through the stunning mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range. Spend some time on the beaches in beautiful Tayrona Park, or learn to scuba dive at Taganga. For literature lovers, take a trip to Aracataca, the birthplace of Colombia’s most famous writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and get a taste of its magic realism.
