Welcome to Savannah, Georgia – the oldest city in Georgia and home to some of the best examples of architecture and culture in the American South. Known as a bastion for easy living, southern hospitality, ancient ways, and youthful enthusiasm, Savannah is a hot tourist attraction couched in slow southern living. The old saying goes something like this: “In Atlanta they ask you ‘what’s your business,’ in Charleston they ask you ‘what’s your mother’s maiden name,’ and in Savannah they ask you ‘what’s your drink?’” Yes, Savannah is a town that is at once both richly cultural and lively effervescent, if you only have three days to explore this magnificent city, here’s how you should do it.

Day 1: Get Oriented

One of the best things about Savannah is that it’s a pleasure to stroll. With over 900 buildings listed as historically or architecturally significant, a walk through Savannah’s Historic District has its appeal. Should you not want to walk through these charming streets and experience the numerous park-like squares for yourself, then why not enjoy a carriage ride through the old quarter, or a Hop-on Hop-off Trolley Tour is a great way to see the highlights of the city.

Day 2: Food and Fun

On day two it’s time to shop and eat like the locals do. Start your morning with a walk down Savannah’s Broughton Street, and see all the small boutiques that make the street famous. People come to Savannah for this street alone, so if you’ve got a shopper in the mix, be forewarned. Another great spot to stroll some of Savannah’s best shops is the Savannah Historic Market. This is a great alternative if you’re going as a group, because in this historic setting you’ll find plenty to do and plenty to eat (try Belford’s Savannah or Tapas by Anna).

Day 3: Tour the History

Part of the great thing about Savannah is that it’s chock-full of history. From as early as the late 1700s, things have been happening here, and with so much history you might figure that there would be a lot to explore – and you’d figure correctly. If architecture is your thing, consider stopping by several of Savannah’s famous historic homes like the Owens-Thomas House, or the Juliette Gordon-Low birthplace home. Literary buffs will love the Flannery O’Conner house, while those that simply love this military side of things will want to explore the Old Fort. Come nightfall, a quintessentially Savannah experience can be had by combining history with entertainment in a nightly Savannah River cruise.
