Ferries from Seattle
The rain-splattered splendors of the Puget Sound are easily accessible by ferry from the docks and piers of the Port of Seattle, Washington. The so-called Emerald City has its fair share of charms, but once you’ve taken in the sights, there are affordable adventures to be had aboard the fleet of ferries that service Vancouver Island and other popular nearby destinations. Even the farthest flung points of interest are mere hours away, so day trips and short visits are simple options. To get the most out of what the region has to offer, plan on setting aside at least a few days to explore.

Victoria, British Columbia

Soak up the colonial influence of the British on the Pacific Northwest by visiting the port city of Victoria, British Columbia. High-speed cruises emanating out of Seattle depart several times a day. Situated on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria’s stately houses and buildings date back to the 1840s, but there are plenty of cosmopolitan attractions as well. The Royal BC Museum, The Pacific Opera Victoria, and The Butchart Botanical Gardens are just a few of the internationally known cultural institutions easily accessed on foot or by public transportation.

Vashon-Maury Island

Experience the true spirit of the Sound just a short ferry ride from Seattle. Unlike many tourist hot spots in the area, Vashon Island is rarely overrun with sightseers. Here it’s still possible to wander aimlessly through sparsely populated farmland and picnic in seclusion with breathtaking views of water and mountains. The Vashon Farmers Market is a must year-round and the Vashon Island Strawberry Festival draws visitors from far and wide every July.

Orcas Island

The largest of the picturesque collection of wild and rugged islands known as the San Juans, Orcas Island is a sure bet for seasonal camping, hiking, and exploring. With more than 30 mi (48 km) of hiking trails winding through unspoiled evergreen forest, the 5,000 acres of Moran State Park are a gem for enthusiasts seeking solitary recreation. The Orcas Island Historical Museum houses a treasure trove of documents and photographs for visiting history buffs.
