Sedona from the Air
By Viator, July 2013
Exploring Sedona by helicopter is one unforgettable way to experience the destination from the air. There are a few options to choose from depending on what exactly you want to see, like Mountains and Ancient Sights; Iconic Formations of Red Rock Country; and Red Rocks and Chapel of the Holy Cross. While a Mountains and Ancient Sights helicopter tour (25 minutes) provides a bird’s-eye view of Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness (including Secret Canyon), Dry Creek area, Rattlesnake Mesa, the ancient cliff homes of the Sinaguan people, Bear Mountain, Fay's Arch and Doe Mesa; the Iconic Formations of Red Rock Country option (35 minutes) introduces you to well-known natural sites like Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, Chicken Point, the Three Nuns at the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and Snoopy Rock from the air. Additionally, the Red Rocks and Chapel of the Holy Cross flight (15 minutes) is a shorter aerial excursion providing a quick taste of Sedona’s natural beauty. Some highlights of the tour include the Three Nuns, Snoopy Rock, Steamboat Rock, Bear Wallow Canyon, Schnebly Hill Road, and, of course, the famous Chapel of the Holy Cross built in the 1950s and rising impressively from Sedona’s red rocks.
Another option for exploring Sedona from the air is via a biplane, an early type of plane with two pairs of wings sitting one above the other. A Classic Biplane Tour of Sedona (20 minutes) is a great choice as you’ll take in a mix of iconic red rocks and fly through otherworldly canyons. Along with enjoying aerial views of Bell Rock, the Chapel of the Holy Cross, Lee Mountain and Mount Wilson, you’ll stare down in awe as you fly through Munds Canyon and Red Canyon. Another highlight of the tour is taking in the Devil’s Sinkhole, named in the early 1880s when farmers felt a shake in the Earth and enormous red dust clouds enveloping the sky. When they came out of their homes to investigate they found this discernible rock ledge opening.
Another biplane option is the Mountains and Canyons Biplane Tour from Sedona (30 minutes). This scenic excursion takes you over popular scenic areas like Bear Wallow Canyon, the tall peak of Mount Wilson at 7,122 feet (2,171 meters), and the popular hiking destination of the Broken Arrow Trail. Some iconic red rock formations you’ll take in include The Fin, Submarine Rock, Cathedral Rock, the Three Nuns and the Chapel of the Holy Cross.
