South Africa is one of the oldest of the New World wine producers, with a century’s head start on California. Along with numerous outstanding restaurants in Cape Town and the surrounding vineyard country, there are numerous specialty events offering pairings of wine with foods both sweet and savory. Here’s a selection:
Cheese. The classic accompaniment to wine is available to try at venerable old estates like Lourensford, or Fairview, with its renowned goats’ cheeses. Both producers these are over 300 year olds while Zevenwacht is a comparative newcomer, established in 1800. They’re famous for cheddar, from varieties ranging from smooth and mild to bite-y and mature.
