Outdoor Adventures in Split
By Viator, September 2014
Keen sailors can get out onto the Adriatic Sea and take the helm to sail over to the island of Čiovo for a delicious beach-side seafood lunch, or spend seven days on the high seas with a week’s cruise down the Dalmatian Coast. Highlights of this trip include the romantic city of Dubrovnik and its lesser-known mini-me incarnation on the island of Korčula, as well as the chance to explore the Benedictine monastery stranded in the middle of a lake on Mljet.
Still out on the water, take a sea-kayaking tour around the foot of Marjan, the forested peninsula that dominates the southern suburbs of Split. Take advantage of the pristine, almost transparent water and calm conditions to kayak over to Čiovo, or if you’re feeling really fit, take an eight-hour kayaking option and paddle all the way to the cosmopolitan party-island of Hvar.
Adrenaline junkies will be happier with white-water rafting trips down the Cetina River as it wends it way through its spectacular limestone gorge. This heart-pumping day trip is also available for cruise visitors on shore excursions, with a worry-free guaranteed time to return to the ship. Life jackets and safety equipment are provided.
Back on dry land, the peninsula of Marjan lies on the side of a dormant volcano and is easily accessible from the center of Split; discover its natural beauty with a morning’s hard hike through the untamed pines for glorious views over the islands and the azure-blue Adriatic as well as the chance to cool off with a dip off sandy Bene Beach.
If that’s too tame, learn how to rock climb on a four-hour, expert-led climbing class high up among Marjan’s limestone crags. Alternatively, take the effort out of travelling uphill and explore Marjan’s many shady trails by electric bike.
