Celebrating Freedom in Culturama

Celebrating Freedom in Culturama

St. Kitts and Nevis islands are known for their numerous festivals, the most exciting of which is Nevis’ Culturama. Typically held in late July or early August, the festival is meant to coincide with the island’s celebration of the emancipation of the slaves, which occurs on August first. Slave descendents represent the dominant demographic in the Nevis population, so the celebration of emancipation is particularly meaningful for the islanders. In addition to emancipation, the festival celebrates the culture and customs of native Nevisians.
