St Maarten
Trip Planning & Itineraries
The island of St Maarten is split into a Dutch side (St Maarten) and a French side (St Martin), so don't be confused if you see two different spellings for this popular Caribbean retreat.
The Dutch side is lively with casinos and nightclubs. The capital is Philipsburg, which has a distinct European flair. St. Martin, the French side, is more low-key. Beautiful beaches surround the whole island, the majority of them with white sands and turquoise water. Snorkeling here is excellent.
Like most Caribbean islands, St Maarten has average daily highs between 83°F (28°C) in January and 86°F (30°C) in July and average lows that rarely dip below a comfy 72°F (22°C).

Suggested Itineraries: St Maarten
Maho Bay, on the southwestern shore, is St Maarten's main resort area. It feels a bit like the Las Vegas strip: while little more than a block long, it's dense with multistory buildings, exclusive jewelers, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and a huge resort and casino.
If you're looking for a beach that's quiet but not totally secluded, Cupecoy is a good choice. This pleasant white-sand beach is backed by low sandstone cliffs, which are eroded in such a way that they provide a run of small semiprivate coves.
