I am sure if you are planning to visit St. Petersburg, you have already done some reading about it, like places to see and things to do. Though it is possible to cover major highlights in four days, as it’s promised by major tour operators and private guides, I am afraid it would not be pleasurable experience. You will be rushed from one place to another and overloaded with superficial information without a chance to take pause to see anything, learn something in depth, or really experience authentic culture imbued with history.
Why not take it easy, spend at least couple of weeks, and take time to talk to local people? I know this process of getting to know each other could bring tremendous pleasure to everyone involved. There's no better way to get to know the local customs and culture of a country than by mingling with real people living in it. So, as an alternative to touristy traps and compatriot infested hotels, where you might hear only one side of the story about Russia, I suggest you go straight to the horse's mouth and come live and/or hang out with us.
If you really want to meet the locals in the area you're going to visit, you should come to our English speaking parties, which I've been running for more than 10 years. We are mostly Russians, students and young professionals and because we are always on the lookout for native speakers of English, it really could be a win-win situation for everyone.
