Stockholm Suggested Itineraries

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and these Scandinavians know how to make good use of their environment. Built on 14 islands, Stockholm is known for its famously blue water, its terracotta coloured buildings, and cobblestone streets. Far from mere eye-candy, this capital city strives to be at the top of modern fashionista, night owl, and foodie lists.

Day 1: Welcome to Stockholm

Being built on 14 islands does things to Stockholm’s layout. Confusing things. Best to situate yourself alongside the modern city center on the main island, or in the middle of Gamla San,  the tiny island housing the historic Old Town. The oldest part of Stockholm is also its most beautiful, containing cobblestone streets, pretty old houses, vaulted cellar restaurants and the impressive Royal Palace. The Stockholm in a Nutshell tour will give you a good overview of the city, but if you’ve got more time to spare and would rather do things on your own, consider a hop-on hop-off boat tour and take advantage of the city’s lovely waterways. Either way, consider picking up a Stockholm Card which saves both time and money.

Day 2: Stockholm by Land and Water

Start the morning off with a Stockholm Bridges Cruise or the Royal Canal Tour and get intimate with those pellucid waterways. Good insider tip: those waters have beckoned to all that gaze upon them for centuries, and as their a source of any Stockholmsian’s pride, they are also open to the public. That means if it calls to you, jump on in!

After your time aboard, walk the old town, with an Old Town Walkabout, and get insider knowledge of the city’s vivid history. To switch things up, consider taking in the old town sites in a horse and carriage, or delight your paranormal fascinations with a late night ghost walk.

Day 3: Around Stockholm

The Swedes were no military pushovers, as you’ll hear about in detail on a day of Viking history and sailing. See how the Vikings lived, breathed, and died on this incredible journey. Or, if nature calls to you more than the trumpets of battle, take in Sweden’s stunning wildlife on a Wildlife Safari trip from Stockholm.

Doing what: Stockholm City Hop-on Hop-off Tour

I had a limited time in Stockholm so this was a very efficient way to see the major sites and get a feel for the city. One can hop off the bus at any of the stops, explore, and then hop back on another bus. For those like me with limited time it was an excellent way to see the city. For those with more time, the tour would be good to take at the beginning of the visit since it gives one an overview after which one can go back and explore places of interest at one's own pace.
