At the heart of the famed Lavaux wine-growing region, the town of Vevey, Switzerland, has a prime location on the banks of Lake Geneva, encircled by the area’s famous tiered vineyards and snow-capped Alps. Here, visitors can explore the snaking alleyways of the old town, stroll the lakeside promenade and sample the old-world charms that make the Swiss Riviera so idyllic.

Vevey is well known for its weekly market, held each Tuesday and Saturday in the Place du Marche marketplace, where local produce and wines are accompanied by art and crafts stalls and live folk musicians. The markets vary with the seasons, too – costumed dancers and alphorn players flock to the marketplace to celebrate the summer months, whereas winter takes on a Christmas theme, with hot mulled wine and home baked gingerbread on sale. The town is also home to the world headquarters of Nestlé, who run the Alimentarium, or Food Museum, although more appealing is the sizable exhibition of Swiss art on display at the Jenisch Museum.
