You can take one of the Sydney Ferries to Balmain to check out an area of Sydney with lots of interesting old terrace houses. Check out the restaurants and cafes and do a bit of shopping.
Balmain is definitely an area of Sydney that is worth checking out. It's not on the regular tourist route but it will give you an idea of old Sydney as well as how people live in Sydney today.
