So many people when they visit Tahiti and French Polynesia do the main islands - Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. Which is great, but if you really want to get off the beaten tourist trail and away from those fancy 5 star resorts, try visiting some of the smaller and more distant islands.
Raiatea and Huahine are good choices, but one of my personal favourites is Tikehau. There is one resort and a village on another atoll, but apart from that, it is all palm trees and crystal clear blue water. The snorkelling is magic !! A great place to drop anchor and not do too much at all for a few days.
