Tasmania’s shores saw the beginning of Australia’s white settlement. Originally known as Van Diemen’s Land, the colony was established in 1803 as a solution to overcrowding in British prisons. Out of the POMs’ (Prisoners of Her Majesty) hard labour came many great buildings and sites that can still be visited today.
