While the vast metropolis of Tokyo dazzles the visitor with modern marvels and only occasionally displays hints of its past, Kyoto - once the imperial capital of Japan - is far more forthcoming with its historical riches.

Although on the other side from the capital of the main island, Kyoto can be reached by the world-famous super fast "Bullet" (actually "Shinkansen") trains in two and a quarter hours. This means if time is really short, you could even take in Kyoto highlights in a day trip, with stunning views of Mount Fuji, Japan's number one natural feature, along the way.

Then again, some of Kyoto's pleasures demand (or rather, politely request - this is Japan after all) to be savored at a more stately pace. The gardens, for one. Whether in spring when the cherry blossoms appear or in the ravishing golden fall, the exquisite Japanese approach to landscaping reaches perfection in Kyoto.

And when those gardens are graced with a structure as elegant as the Golden Pavilion, you are witnessing humanity and nature in perfect harmony. This refinement is also evident in the city’s numerous temples, including Kiyomizu, a wooden building dating back to the 9th century which was constructed entirely without nails. From its broad terrace you get a great view of Kyoto.

Another wooden structure, Sanjusangendo Hall (in fact the longest wooden building in Japan), houses 1,001 devotional statues of the goddess of mercy, greeting the visitor in serene rows. Meanwhile the moat and monumental square towers of Nijo Castle once struck fear into the hearts of enemy soldiers, but its art collection and famous gardens can now be appreciated by all.

If time allows, the nearby city of Nara rewards a visit with such sites as the fire-engine red Kasuga shrine with its thousands of metallic lanterns as well as the city’s main park where deer – once considered sacred – roam freely.
