Museum Puri Lukisan

If you only have time to visit one art museum during your time in Ubud, Museum Puri Lukisan is your best bet. While most galleries on the island focus on Balinese painting, this museum, founded in 1956, showcases a variety of pieces, including traditional pieces and woodcarvings. It also holds the distinction of being Ubud’s oldest museum.

The collection's pieces, each well-labeled in English, are divided among three buildings. The first contains classical Ubud art, including wayang-style paintings and ink drawings, as well as a collection of work by expats who influenced the local art scene in the 1930s. The collection in the second building, described as modern traditional, displays colorful works of the Young Artist movement, led by Dutch-born Arie Smit, while the third building houses a special exhibition space and a permanent collection of classical and traditional pieces.

If possible, plan to visit this museum before the others in Ubud, as the overview of Balinese painting styles will help you better appreciate what you see in the other collections.
