The Rocky Mountaineer Train

To take in some of the most spectacular scenery in the Vancouver area, climb aboard the Rocky Mountaineer Train for a one-day rail trip to Whistler, home of North America’s largest ski resort. The “Whistler Sea to Sky Climb” train travels 74 miles (120 kilometers) along the shore overlooking Howe Sound and the Coast Mountains, as you eat breakfast, enjoy entertainment on board, and soak up the views. You’ll pull into Whistler three-and-a-half hours later, just in time to have lunch and briefly explore the village. The return train departs from Whistler mid-afternoon. Alternatively, you can stay overnight in Whistler, so you have more time to experience the mountain town, and catch the return train the next afternoon.

If you have more time, head for the Rocky Mountains. In two days, you can make the scenic journey aboard the Rocky Mountaineer to Banff, Lake Louise, or Jasper. You’ll travel from Vancouver through the Fraser Canyon before stopping overnight at a hotel in Kamloops. The next morning, back on the train, you’ll continue into the snow-capped Rockies. Heading for Banff or Lake Louise, you’ll have views of Rogers Pass, Kicking Horse Canyon, and the Spiral Tunnels, while en route to Jasper, you’ll glimpse the 12,972-foot (3,954-meter) Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.

In five days, you can take in all the highlights of the Rockies, starting from Vancouver and traveling round-trip to Jasper, Lake Louise, and Banff. You’ll take the overnight Via Rail train from Vancouver to Jasper, where you’ll have time for a quick area tour. The next morning, you’ll travel beneath the mountain peaks on the Icefields Parkway, stopping to walk on the dramatic Athabasca Glacier. That afternoon, you’ll explore Lake Louise before arriving in Banff for the night. You’ll return to Vancouver aboard the deluxe Rocky Mountaineer train.

The ultimate Rocky Mountaineer adventure is a nine-day round-trip excursion from Vancouver to Jasper, Lake Louise, and Banff. This longer tour starts with an overnight in Vancouver and gives you more time to explore in each destination. You’ll board the Rocky Mountaineer train in Vancouver on Day 2, spend the night in Kamloops, and continue to Jasper the next day. After an overnight in Jasper, you’ll explore the Columbia Icefields, the Athabasca Glacier, and Lake Louise, where you’ll spend the following night. You’ll take a side trip into Yoho National Park and then travel to Banff, which will be your base for two nights. A highlight of the trip is a scenic helicopter tour over the Canadian Rockies. From Banff, the Rocky Mountaineer will take you back to Vancouver.
