The George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a one-hour drive from Vancouver, in the Fraser River estuary on Westham Island. The 740-acre protected area is one of the best bird-watching locations in all of Canada.Reifel (the sanctuary’s namesake) bought the land in 1927 and created waterfowl habitats by constructing dykes and causeways. Reifel Farm also produced one-third of Canada’s sugar beet seed during the Second World War—in addition to Reifel’s brewery and real estate businesses.
