Not everyone can afford the traditional 40-minute Gondola Ride that is so emblematic of Venice. Maybe you've splurged on a grand hotel, some gourmet meals, or your budget just doesn't run to that luxury, at least not on this trip. There's a very cheap alternative, about a dollar per person: the Traghetto, which is a regular Gondola that ferries customers across the Grand Canal, generally locals returning home with their shopping, taking a short-cut. There's a good video here: http://bit.ly/qr6pfU. You can find Traghetti at half a dozen spots along the GC; I took one near the Rialto Fish Market.
