Located in Northern Italy’s Veneto province, “fair Verona” is known as piccola Roma (little Rome) for its importance in imperial days. The 13th and 14th centuries were noted for the savage family feuding of which Shakespeare wrote in Romeo and Juliet. In fact, one of the city’s most famous attractions today is the monument known as Juliet’s House (Casa di Giulietta), where romantics come to pay homage to the star-crossed lovers whose story was reportedly based on real 13th century Verona residents.
The birthplace of Renaissance artist and inventor, Leonardo da Vinci¸ Verona is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its many buildings and bridges of great historical and architectural importance. One of these is the pink marble Roman Arena amphitheatre, circa 30 AD - still used today for open-air opera, theater and fairs - along with nearby Piazza delle Erbe, graced by its well-known fountain, Fontana di Madonna Verona, and Torre dei Lamberti, the looming 12th century tower. You won’t want to miss the Castelvecchio Museum, formerly a moated fortress, and now housing artworks ranging from Renaissance to modern. And, of course, like any Italian city of note, one can feast on authentic Italian cuisine and creamy gelato!
