Visiting Craft Markets in Victoria Falls

No reviews, be the first!

Because international travelers flock to Victoria Falls resident artisans cater to visitors. As a result, local craft and wood markets, as well as curio shops are easy to find. And informal points of sale are often set up on street corners, too. Tribal drums, marimbas, traditional jewelry, bowls, baskets, stone carvings and batique fabric paintings are just some of the most common items found in these markets. Soap stone carvings from the Shona tribe are one of the most popular (and traditional) items for sale.

The Elephant’s Walk shopping village offers travelers a uniquely Zimbabwean experience. A host of specialty shops sell tribal art, local baskets and handcrafted jewelry, as well as zebra skin rugs and taxidermy animals. The Women’s Craft Market, where kiosks are operated exclusively by local ladies, provides woman with a sense of ownership, a basic income and the opportunity to participate in local commerce.

Visitors should be ready to barter. It’s best to approach shop owners with kindness and good humor, but pressure to make sales is part of the game. Competition is fierce and supply is high, so it’s wise to survey the markets entirely before making purchases. Buying more items from one worker usually results in better deals.
