St Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom)

The St Stephen's Cathedral, or Stephansdom, is the heart of Vienna both geographically and emotionally. It is a magnificent dark Gothic church, beloved and unmissable in Vienna. A church has stood on this site since the 12th century, but little ...

Really enjoyed this! Although a few raindrops were falling as the group met by the Naschmarkt train station (Kettenbrueckengasse), our tour guide Andrea met us with excitement and a guarantee for a great time and clearing skies. She was right on both points. This tour group was an enthusiastic mix of hostel-hopping 20-somethings and older tourists. As we walked along Vienna’s old town streets and among memorials, famous buildings and landmarks, Andrea held a running chatter in English of historical facts combined with oodles of personal anecdotes about growing up in Austria. Her love of the city, and her drive to share that with the walkers was contagious. She included lots of tidbits not found in standard tourist guidebooks.

One word of warning – do not confuse this tour with Viator’s Vienna City Walking Tour, which ends at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. This one continues on through the Stadtpark, to a local restaurant for schnitzel and strudel, a 20-minute walk from St. Stephen’s. For those staying in the old town, it’s good to note the U4 train station has a stop in the park with frequent trains still running after 10 pm.

This tour would be great on the first night in Vienna to get acclimated to the city and find out what you’d like to go back to the next day. For me, it was my last night in the city and a fun way to find out some more things about the places I’d seen and to enjoy dinner out with new friends made on the tour.

There were only 3 people on this English language tour so there were many opportunities to ask questions. Our tour guide was excellent. She detailed so much history of Vienna and there was so much passion for her city in the telling. She showed us many interesting sights and took us to places we would never have found on our own such as the Spanish horse school, St. Stephens Cathedral, the palace,Mozart's house with the only picture of him withouta wig. She also pointed out many examples of architecture. We all learned so much.
