Food in Vienna
By Viator, November 2013
Vienna’s Naschmarkt stretches along the Wienzeile and is an Austrian foodie institution. Taking an expert-led guided tour of the market to experience the colors and aromas is like embarking on a culinary trip around the world. The food stalls offer a mixed bag of international cuisines: falafel, sushi, pizza, noodles, tacos, curries and delicious Viennese pastries. The quality of the produce on offer is the stuff of legend: specialty breads, local artisan cheeses, fresh fish, great slabs of meat, fruit, piles of vegetables and spices from across the world. Most stallholders are happy to offer samples and tastings of their wares but won’t react well to attempts to haggle over prices.
To experience the formal world of Austrian fine dining, take in a Strauss or Mozart concert at the Schonbrunn Palace or Musikverein and combine this with dinner in the salubrious surroundings of Cafe-Restaurant Residenz or Restaurant Bristol. For a more casual introduction to the cuisine of Vienna, take a turn of the giant Ferris wheel in Prater Amusement Park before heading off to sample local Riesling wines and Austrian schnitzel and apple strudel in a traditional Viennese heuriger (wine bar).
