The Wachau Valley can be explored by road, with stop-offs at several vineyards for tastings and tours of the cellars. Day trips also include a visit to the pretty village of Dürnstein and its castle ruins, where English King Richard the Lionheart was held captive in 1192, as well as a tour of the massive Baroque Melk Abbey at the western end of the valley.
To escape the city vibe completely, take a guided bike tour through the Wachau Valley to appreciate the glorious scenery, hillside villages and hilltop castles at a slower pace; this day out involves a train trip from Vienna before picking up a bike and cycling through six pretty villages, with a tour around Dürnstein Castle. Visit family-owned wineries not usually open to the public to sample the produce and there’s even time for a swim in the Danube – weather permitting.
And if you are short on time, then Vienna is the only capital city in the world that has extensive vineyards within its boundaries, mostly producing white rieslings and red merlots. Take an hour’s trip to a traditional heuringer (a rustic Viennese wine bar) to learn about local vintages and to sample two each of red and white in the restaurant’s vinothek (tasting shop) and maybe even decide to stay on and experience traditional Viennese cooking afterwards.
