Wanaka
Trip Planning & Itineraries
Wanaka is a popular summer and winter resort town, known for its New Year revelries. But the splendor of the surrounding mountains and lakes, plus the long list of adrenaline-inducing outdoor activities, make it a favoured tourist destination year-round.
Wanaka is located just over 62 miles (100 km) from Queenstown, at the southern end of Lake Wanaka, and is the gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park and the Treble Cone, Cardrona, Harris Mountains and Pisa Range ski areas.
Suggested Itineraries in Wanaka
In 1964 a mountainous area in northwestern Otago and southern Westland was earmarked as a national park named after its highest peak, Mt Aspiring (9,931ft / 3,027m). The park now blankets over 3,500 sq km along the Southern Alps, from the Haast River in the north to its border with Fiordland National Park in the south.
The park has wide valleys, secluded flats, over 100 glaciers and sheer mountains. The southern end of the park around Glenorchy is well-trafficked by visitors.
