Travelers to Washington DC could easily spend weeks exploring the many museums, monuments, parks and attractions showcased That being said, there are also an array of worthwhile day trips accessible from the city. To help you plan your quick jaunt from the nation’s capital, here are some suggestions.

Annapolis, Maryland

About 45 minutes from Washington DC is Annapolis, a vibrant historic district with original 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century architecture. Stop by the Maryland State House, which was the capitol of the United States from November 26, 1783 to August 13, 1784. Interestingly, this is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use and the only state house to ever serve as a U.S. capitol. The William Paca House and Garden, an 18th-century Georgian mansion, is another historical attraction that visitors can tour for a glimpse into Annapolis’ past. Along with heritage attractions, Annapolis features a lively downtown waterfront scene, with sail boat and yacht races, trendy restaurants and boutiques.

Harpers Ferry, West Virgina

Located about an hour and a half outside Washington DC, Harpers Ferry sits in the center of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park as well as along the Appalachian Trail and C & O Canal trail, making it a popular spot for backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts. On the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, visitors can white water raft, go tubing, fish, kayak and zip-line, while the nearby trails and 4,000-acre (16-square kilometer) Harpers Ferry National Historical Park are perfect for hikers. Additionally, Harpers Ferry is home to an array of historical sites — many of which are in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park — some of which include the John Brown Museum, the restored Harper House, A Place in Time Museum and Civil War Museum.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Travelers from Washington DC can reach Gettysburg in about an hour and a half. Known as the site of one of the Civil War’s most important battles, Gettysburg will immerse you in U.S. history. Most visitors spend their time touring the battlefields and exploring museums like the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, American Civil War Museum, Hall of Presidents and the Jennie Wade House, once home to the only Gettysburg civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg. For those who need transportation and/or would like a knowledgeable guide while exploring the site of the largest battle ever fought on U.S. soil, a Gettysburg Day Trip from Washington DC Tour is a smart option. Highlights of the tour include touring Gettysburg and the historic battlefield, visiting the Gettysburg Diorama and exploring Cemetery Ridge, the place where Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address.
