Xian Museum is one of the city’s most recent attractions, and stands in an ensemble of buildings both ancient and modern which provide a refuge from busy streets. Like the Shaanxi History Museum, it contains many pieces from archeological digs in the area, as well as jade ornaments and impressive calligraphy exhibits. It is particularly noted for its collection of Buddhist art and artifacts.
The modern museum building echoes classic Chinese architecture, and complements the nearby Small Wild Goose Pagoda, which was built in 707 AD. This 15-tiered structure is a little more refined than the Big Wild Goose Pagoda which was built a few years earlier in the same light stone, and its solid construction has withstood numerous earthquakes.
Excellent tour. With foreign tourists down over 80% since 2008, this tour through Viator turned out to be a private tour for my wife and I! Small but nice air conditioned van us + driver + English speaking guide. Guide was very informative and knowledgeable. With just 2 of us in the tour, we could ask a lot of questions to learn more of the city and culture. Lunch was very good with lots to eat.

Make sure you give yourself an extra 3 or 4 hours on one day to cycle around the city wall, though; it's really worth doing! Continue Reading »
