Xian tours, sightseeing, things to do

Xian

Trip Planning & Itineraries

Shaanxi was the center of Chinese civilization, and Xian is a magnificent window through which to view it. Two centuries before Homer penned the Iliad and the Odyssey (and Rome was founded), five centuries prior to the Buddha's enlightenment, Xian was already a classic world city.

Today Xian is understandably one of China's major tourist attractions. The big draw card is the Army of Terracotta Warriors, and there are countless other sights scattered in and around the city. An Islamic element is found throughout the city, with mosques and marketplaces tucked away in back alleys.

Suggested Itineraries: Xian

The Big Goose Pagoda (Dayan Tǎ) stands in what was formerly the Temple of Great Maternal Grace in the south of Xian. The original pagoda was built in AD 652 with only five stories, but it has been renovated, restored and added to many times - now rising 64 climbable meters.

The Great Mosque (Daqīngzhēn Si) is one of the largest in China. The mosque is built in a Chinese architectural style with the grounds taken up by gardens. Still an active place of worship, it holds prayer services each day. The courtyard of the mosque can be visited, but only Muslims may enter the prayer hall.
