Christmas in Zagreb

As the holiday season kicks off in Croatia, the capital is a lively place to be, with colorful light displays brightening up the city center, elaborate nativity scenes taking over shop windows, and traditional Christmas trees adorned with candles, paper lanterns and Licitar (baked dough hearts) lining the streets.

The center of Zagreb’s Christmas festivities is Ban Jelacic Square where an atmospheric Christmas market serves up mugs of Kuhano Vino (hot mulled wine), hand-crafted decorations and traditional gifts, and there’s also a dazzling Christmas tree and an open-air ice rink. Look out for the traditional wreaths, designed from sprouting wheat wrapped in red, white and blue ribbons to symbolize the colors of the Croatian flag.

Of course, you don’t have to stay in the city over Christmas – take a day trip to the Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is transformed into a natural winter wonderland over the holiday season; hit the ski slopes at Velika or Platak; or warm up with a swim in the steamy hot springs at Varazdin.
