With so many travelers heading to the coastal beaches and island resorts, it’s easy to overlook the sights of inland Croatia, but there’s plenty to see in and around the capital. Popular day trips from Zagreb include the medieval town of Samobor, renowned for its fine dining options and delicious local desserts, as well as the abundance of hiking opportunities in the surrounding Samobor Mountains, and the historic town of Karlovac, also a hotspot for rafting and kayaking.

Stretching north of Zagreb to the Slovene border, the picturesque Zagorje hinterlands are a patchwork of rolling vineyards and traditional villages, with highlights including the museum village of Kumrovec and the beautifully preserved Trakošćan Castle, Croatia’s most impressive medieval castle, set in 215-acres of parklands. Close to Trakošćan, the Baroque town Varaždin was capital of Croatia in the 18th-century and retains a wealth of striking architecture, earning itself the nickname of ‘Little Vienna’ and making it a firm hit with day-trippers.

A little further afield but still manageable on a day tour is the Plitvice Lakes National Park, one of the country’s most dazzling natural landscapes, set around 16 lakes, or else hop over the border to the Slovene capital of Ljubljana and discover two countries in one day.
