The Destination Activities Market
The travel activities market in the U.S. totaled $26.8 billion in 2009. That's more than the U.S. car rental and cruise markets—combined—and nearly three-times as much as the packaged travel segment. Travel activities also showed solid resilience to negative market impacts, performing better than U.S. leisure travel overall during the economic troubles of 2009. As the economy begins to rebound and travel gets back on track, online sales of activities in the U.S. are expected to outpace U.S. online leisure travel sales overall in 2010 and 2011.
The need for mobile functionality is growing as more than 2 in 3 travelers with mobile devices saying they are likely to use their mobile device to research (64%) and purchase (63%) activities in the future, according to findings from PhoCusWright's 'When They Get There (and Why They Go); Activities, Attractions, Events and Tours' study, which Viator sponsored.
