Surveys: Traveler Perceptions and Behavior related to the Trip Activity Market

In the spring of 2007, Viator and Harris Interactive asked 2,000 online travelers about destination activities. We also spoke to the global tour operators who run them. Here are some of the highlights, or read the complete press release.

  • One-third (33%) of travelers surveyed say they are "more likely" to book trip activities in advance of travel than they were three years ago, citing saving time and saving money as the main reasons for doing so (54% each).
  • But many travelers still gamble with availability with nearly two in five (39%) saying they have tried to purchase tickets for a local activity but were forced to alter their plans or forgo the activity because it was sold out on the day/time they wanted to go.
  • Global Tour Operators say advance bookings are increasing with nearly half (49%) reporting that 50% or more of their bookings were made in advance during the last year.
  • Three out of 4 tour operators reported that advance bookings have at least occasionally limited availability for walkup customers, with 20% saying these limitations are "Frequently, Somewhat frequently or very frequently" (23% said advance bookings have never limited availability).
