There are several sections of the Great Wall to visit but, by far, the most popular one was built during the Ming Dynasty (circa 1368-1640). Badaling, 50 miles northwest of Beijing city, has undergone significant renovations since the late 1950s and was the first portion of the wall opened to the public.
No surprise, this area is tourist friendly, filled with lots of hotels and restaurants. It's also the spot that President Nixon and his wife visited during his historic 1972 China trip.
