An Amsterdammertje is a pole on a sidewalk that is used to prevent unwanted parking and separates the roadway/pavement. In the days of the horse and wagon an upside down gun barrel was used. The crosses are part of the city arms and are named after the apostle St Andrew who died a martyr's death.
