Vienna Woods and Mayerling Half Day Trip

Vienna, Austria

My Rating

My Review

We enjoyed this tour despite the heavy rain. The bus was comfortable, the commentary interesting. The Vienna Woods were picturesque, and the cruise on the man-made underground lake was fun. It was a very pleasant and relaxing half-day tour.

Vienna City Hop-on Hop-off Tour

My Review

Our visit to Vienna coincided with the most dismal cold and wet weather for summer. Many countries in that part of Europe ended up being flooded. We abandoned our bus ride because we simply couldn't see anything through the windows, fogged up inside and just solid rain outside. The bus company staff bravely did their best, remaining cheerful and helpful while being drenched and cold despite their umbrellas. My rating is for the staff, well done guys, much appreciated.

Girona, Figueres and Dali Museum Day Trip from Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Our guide in Girona was very knowledgeable and informative about this fascinating medieval town. The various layers of history were revealed to us -- occupation by the ancient Romans, then the Moors and their co-existence with the Jews, then the Catholics with their anti-Jew ignorant bias, the Black Plague through to modern times.

Figueres is a cute town but the feature is of course the Dali Museum! Our guide gave us a good introduction to its history and Dali himself. That man was weird, but crazy, funny weird. The museum is so full of his works spanning everything from cartoon-like drawings to amazing ceilings, sculptures and even astounding jewellery. You'll come out of there with feeling of a kind of overloaded wonderment.

Overall a great day's tour from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona.

Small-Group Tour: Knights Templar Historical Tour from Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal

5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Wow, talk about stepping back into history! Clambering around a ruined fort on an island, wandering through a massive ancient monastery, strolling through cute towns and having an amazing lunch at a restaurant for a handful of Euros. Then a great finish having our first taste of the wonderfuil local liquor Ginja with a coffee within the ancient castle walls on top of a small mountain.

A wonderful day in the countryside of Spain, made all the better by our guide Miguel from CooltourLx who is passionate about the history of the area.

Private Tour: Floating Markets of Damnoen Saduak Cruise Day Trip from Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

As we had already been on an elephant ride, and having read criticisms of this particular elephant camp, we asked our guide to delete this from our itinerary.

Our guide was very chatty in the car, while we hurtled along at 130km an hour in 80 zones.

As it was our last day in Thailand we had minimal baht with us and I think our guide lost interest in us. We clearly weren't going to buy anything so he wasn't going to get any commissions.

We stopped at an orchid farm but were left to our own devices. Ditto at a teak carving factory. The floating markets were good fun and we parted with our last 600 baht to have a paddle boat to ourselves. The narrow waterways are very overcrowded but that added to the atmosphere.

Once we got back to our hotel we did not get the customary Thai farewell, they just hopped in the car and were off.

Khao Yai National Park and Elephant Ride Day Trip from Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

We were a small group in a mini-bus, there was no microphone for the guide so while we up front could hear him, the people down the back couldn't. When the guide wasn't talking to us he kept up a non-stop conversation in Thai seemingly with himself as the driver seemed to be trying to ignore him.

We stopped at a village on the way and walked through the markets. Wow was that an eye-opener as to what the locals eat!

The ox-cart ride was something different, an interesting experience but nothing dramatic.

The waterfall was about a 1 km walk, at the end down about 180 steps. Down is easy, up the same steps is a little harder. The falls are again interesting but not dramatic. On the way back through the national park we stopped when a group of wild monkeys were on the road, and later saw a solitary wild deer peering above the long grass.

Lunch was at a resort and the highlight of the day then was the elephant ride through the jungle in this resort. Once we exited the river the mahout offered to slide off and use my camera while I sat on the elephant's neck for the rest of the ride. Our guide certainly was familiar with cameras as he took very good still and movie shots with my Canon EOS60D. Every shot shows me with this huge wide grin because I was having such a great time. As for how the elephants are treated, not once did we see any of the elephants prodded or struck, and our young mahout sang to the elephant as he rode it.

Bangkok Chinatown and Night Markets Small-Group Tour including Dinner

Bangkok, Thailand

My Review

We had the same guide as the tuk tuk tour, with only three of us this time. Again the English language barrier was a bit of a problem.

This too was a very interesting tour, and when the rain hit in a big way, our guide raced off to the local 7/11 to buy my wife and I plastic raincoats. She refused to let us pay her for them.

Again, a temple or two, one being very impressive with its massive grounds. We walked through some historic market areas, and at nightfall through the flower market. It is just massive, makes the Amsterdam flower market look like a miniature. It is in the form mainly of a street market but goes for many blocks.

We then finished up having a Chinese dinner with our guide. Along with the tuk tuk tour it gave us a very good view of older Bangkok and was well worthwhile.

Bangkok Tuk Tuk Small Group Adventure Tour

Bangkok, Thailand

My Rating

My Review

This was novel and fun introduction to Bangkok. There were five of us tourists and our guide in three tuk tuks. Our guide was a very pleasant young lady but I only understood about half of her English. She could not understand most of our questions back to her.

The tour took us through very interesting parts of Bangkok, dropping us off and then picking us up at various spots. We walked through markets in alleys, some major temples and along street markets too.

All in all a very good morning's tour and a good introduction to the more basic Bangkok. Recommended to any first-time visitor to Bangkok.

We had arrived in Bangkok in the afternoon and the car was already at our hotel. However they kindly waited for us to freshen up (we had just arrived from Europe).

We were dropped at River City and stood around for an hour till 7pm when we boarded our boat. Dinner was fine and our table was on the top deck, right next to the karaoke speaker used by the entertainers. An interesting evening and good introduction to the night sights of Bangkok.

Bavarian Mountains and Salt-Mines Tour from Salzburg

Salzburg, Austria

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

The trip through the Bavarian alps gave plenty of interesting scenery, but there were no stops for photographs. Trying to snap a photo through a dirty bus window with trees whizzing past is not ideal. Time in the Berchtesgaden village could have been shortened to allow for stops. When I asked if there were any photo stops on the way back the tour guide was quite dismissive in his reply.

The salt mines tour was interesting, but there was no warning about the long down-hill slides or the long stairs down as the alternative. The mine guide spoke at the same time as the hand-held audio-guide and their video monitors are small screen out-dated CRTs - time for some large LCD screens so everyone can see them.

Both the alps and the salt mines were very interesting, unfortunately marred by bad organisation.

Bratislava Day Trip from Vienna

Vienna, Austria

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

Our Bratislava trip started with a pick-up at our hotel taking us to the bus terminal where we were given a yellow dot on our shirt and a return bus ticket. The bus was the regular very efficient service from Vienna to Bratislava where we were met by our walking tour guide. He was very knowledgable and helpful in his comments and answers. We were expecting a box lunch but it turned out to be a sit down lunch in a cafe, no complaints there! The old town of Bratislava itself is a disappointment as the communist era seems to have ruined a lot of it. As you cross under the freeway from the bus terminal there is a small replica of the synagogue that was torn down as it was in the way. It is a very bad and insulting attempt, some of the walls being merely painted fabric on a wooden frame. We chose to spend more time in Bratislava on some family research so we skipped the 2pm return bus and caught the 5pm bus, meaning we didn't get dropped back to our hotel across town, but with Vienna's excellent U-bahn system that was no problem at all.

My Review

Oh yes, what a place! We were too late for the tour that afternoon so our vouchers were marked for the next two days, with no drama at all.

The dinner was OK, not sumptuous, but then we knew it was a package deal. Beware the trick though, an aperitif is included but if you ask for a wine instead you will be charged full price for it.

We elected to pay just a little more for VIP tickets and were glad we did. The room had pretty well filled up but we were directed to our seats in the first two rows. The VIP tickets included a free drink at intermission too though we opted just for bottles of water instead of champagne.

All in all, we loved it. A must do package but do go VIP.

Gustav Klimt Vienna Combo: Belvedere Palace, Vienna Card and Optional Albertina Museum

Vienna, Austria

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

The Vienna card was the greatest benefit as we used them extensively on the excellent U-bahn and tram system throughout Vienna. The Belvedere Palace is a little way outside of the Ring surrounding the old city and silly us, we decided to walk there on a warm sunny day -- we got the tram back!

The Gustav Klimt display is very interesting, detailing his life as well as his works. They were interspersed with works of his contemporaries as well.

A bonus was a voucher for coffee at the Cafe Central, not to be missed even if you do have queue for a table at times. Sit inside not outside, so you can absorb the atmosphere and elegance of a by-gone era, and those cakes, mmmm-mmm!

It really is second only to Prague in its picturesque beauty.

The castle is magnificent and the tour of it is well worthwhile. Less worthwhile is the lunch included which fortunately we didn't opt for. While others were sitting inside a restaurant we were wandering the little streets that the tour did not include and found a gorgeous pizza shop in a side street.

We absolutely loved the tour and it is obvious why Cesky Krumlov is UNESCO listed.

Very interesting. But if tour participants are 30 minutes late then that should be their tough luck and not a penalty on everyone who is on time. In compensation our guide gave us more time at the end but the cheeky sods who were late didn't even complete the tour. All in all a most interesting tour into a sad but fascinating history. The cemetery is amazing in the number of people buried in such a small area over so long a time.

Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands Small Group Day Trip from Edinburgh

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

We really enjoyed our one-day tour to the Highlands. Our guide Neil C made the history of the battles in the various areas come alive for us. Scenery is amazing, and yes some might find it's a longish drive from anywhere to anywhere but we Aussies are used to much greater distances anyway. It was a slightly smaller Mercedes 35 seater, making for a smaller group so we got off and on the bus quicker, and there were less people crowding into one spot than if it were a giant 55 seater. Also made it more comfortable on the narrow winding roads. A definite must do if you're reading this and thinking "should I?"
