My brother and I arrived on a Wednesday morning and we didn't experience the "big crowds" because apart from our small group there wasn't any body else! Not that we were complaining because once you descended down to the bottom of the mine tunnels you really appreciate the lack of people.
Our tour guide (I forgot her name) a young, American girl from California made the whole walking tour an enjoyable and informative one.
