Skip the Line: Vatican Museums Walking Tour including Sistine Chapel, Raphael's Rooms and St Peter's

Rome, Italy

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Definitely spend the extra money for the Skip the Line tour - it's well worth the money. This was my third trip to the Vatican museums, and it was great again. Stella was our guide and she was extremely knowledgeable about everything. The meeting place for this tour is great - it's right by the Cafe Vatican - and there are a thousand people milling around. It's the meeting spot for a bunch of groups. The tour company had t-shirts on and were easy to find. We paid extra to go in early (at 8:10am) and this was great too. We still had to get in line - but it went very, very fast. The early tour is great too because there is a small group (we had 10 people) and you don't have to use the headphones to hear. It's easier to ask questions, and Stella could tailor the tour to our interests. At 8am it was already super hot, but Stella did a great job of finding shade along the way (some guides didn't and you could see their uncomfortableness oozing out!). You get to see just the highlights on this tour - and you have to move really quickly through the museums. I would reccomend this tour for a "first timer" to the Vatican museums, but if you have gone before - you are going to see the same highlights. I wish I would have paid extra for the Friday night tour - where you can go in at night and see the museums. We heard friends raving about how great that tour was.

Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este Half-Day Trip from Rome

Rome, Italy

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

This tour is just ok - not terrible and definitely not awesome. I wish they would put Tivoli Gardens in the title, because that's a highlight. First off, the company picked us up at our hotel in a 10 passanger van. The driver drove like a maniac (worse that a NYC cab driver), and wouldn't switch on the air conditioning. It was 100 degrees outside, so the 5 people in our party and the five others we picked up before going to the meeting point, were very uncomfortable. We should have taken a taxi. Our first stop was Hadrian's Villa, which is a great place. It's just ruins though - and we only spent about 45 minutes there seeing the HUGE estate - it's definitely not enough time to see it or really hear any stories or learn any history. Then we took off for Villa d'Este in Tivoli - which has the most amazing gardens and fountains I have ever seen. The bad part, you only get about 20-30 minutes there - so you can't get a great feel for any of it. They give you 30 minutes of free time to explore the gardens and the town - which is famous for their olive oil. However, it takes you about 10 minutes to get out of Villa d'Este, so you really don't have enough time to shop or see much of the town. Important to note, we were about an hour late getting back to Rome (around 8:15pm), which was a big deal for some people who had dinner reservations. When you get back to Rome, they make multiple drop-off stops - basically 4 stops between Spanish Steps and the Train station.

Milan Half-Day Sightseeing Tour with da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'

Milan, Italy

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

So, I could have sworn that this was advertised as a walking tour - but it's definitely not. I gave the tour three stars, but only for seeing The Last Supper. Withouth that, this tour would have been terrible. First we boarded a HUGE bus and drove straight to the church to see The Last Supper. It's amazing and moving, and everyone should see it. Our group was so large (about 50 people), so we had to break into multiple groups to go into see the painting - and you only get 15 minutes inside (they are very strict about this time limit). The tour was advertised in English, which it was, but it was also in Portugese. It's not a huge deal, but you waste a lot of time translating everything into two languages. After the church, you board the bus again - and head over to the the opera house and the Duomo area. Both are beautiful, but we really didn't learn any information about the area. You get 20 minutes of free time to go in the church on your own. We had already done this ourselves, so it was 20 minutes of hanging around. Then we headed to the castle - well, we walked to the courtyard of the castle - which you can do on your own too for free. Overall, I was highly disappointed with the sightseeing portion of the tour. First of all, from a bus, you really can't see a whole lot. Second, with the translation, we didn't have time to hear/learn a whole lot. And finally, if you can, go to The Last Supper on your own - and find a walking tour of the city.

Lake Como Day Trip from Milan

Milan, Italy

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

Lake Como is gorgeous! Overall, this trip was good, but honestly, you need more time! We boarded the bus to Como, which was a cute little city. You get about 30 minutes of free time here, before boarding a public boat to Bellagio. It's a 2.5 hour trip. You do get a guided tour of the lake via headphones. Here's the deal - the guide sits in the restaurant inside - and there are certain parts of the boat where you cannot hear her on the headsets. She didn't tell us this until after we found seats. It was beautiful outside, so of course we wanted to sit outside on the boat and see the sites But, by doing that, and not sitting inside closer to the guide, we forfeited the sound on our headphones. On the boat, you can get pizza if you want, otherwise you need to eat in Bellagio. You get about an hour in Bellagio - which if you haven't had lunch - is about all you have time for. Bellagio is an AMAZING town, and we wanted to stay much, much longer. With lunch, we could only walk around town for about 10 minutes before meeting our guide again. There were about 50 people in the group, so it's definitely not a quaint little group. If you have the time, spend a week on Lake Como - if not, this tour is a good one for you to make sure you want to go back - but I can already tell you that you will.

Heidiland and Liechtenstein Tour from Zurich: Two Countries in One Day

Zurich, Switzerland

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

Overall, this wasn't my favorite tour that I have ever taken. You travel to Heidiland to see the Heidi House (the younger people in my family had no idea who Heidi was, and were underimpressed to say the least), and you also get to spend about 45 minutes in Lichtenstein, but you don't get spend a lot of time anywhere. We did also get a small spot in "the city of roses" but I still have no idea what the name of the town was. There wasnt a walking tour - instead the tour guide sent us to an "inexpensive restaurant" which wasn't so inexpensive.. and it was PACKED. The service and food at the restaurant was good though, so I can't complain so much. However, i didn't realize that a lunch stop was on the intinerary, or that we had to bring extra money for it. After the tour, you can say that you "went to Lichtenstein" which was important to us - but honestly, you see nothing but a one block stretch of street with 45 minutes to "shop" in the 2 souvenir shops. The "walking tour" portions of the three stops (city of roses, Heidiland and Lichtenstein) included a "walking tour" of each - none of the walking tours lasted more than 5 minutes. So, overall, not the best tour and wouldn't spend the money again.

Budapest City Walking Tour

Budapest, Hungary

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

Overall, this tour was great and we got to see almost the entire city, at least all of the major highlights. The company HQ is easy to find, and if you only have 1-2 days in Budapest, take this tour, as it was the best way to see the city. It's a lot of walking, and also includes the subway too, so you cover the entire city pretty quickly. We were also treated to a coffee and strudel break, which was a nice treat. Chubba, our tour guide, was a good guide, had great stories to share, and a ton of enhusiasm. The tour company had a bunch of other tours - but beware, you might get the same guide for other tours (we did!).

Skip the Line: Chateaux de Chambord, Chenonceau and Loire Valley Wine-Tasting Day Trip from Paris

Paris, France

My Rating
3 star rating: Worth doing

My Review

This was one of those activities that was a must-do. It was an interesting day - we saw two castles and had lunch at an amazing winery. Good parts - the castles were stunning, and the owner of the vineyard/lunch place/chateau is amazingly entertaining and funny. Bad parts - the drive takes 3 hours out there and another 3 hours back after a long day. And you only have less than an hour at each castle, which doesn't give you enough time to explore either one. I wish we would have had more time to explore the castles, and that the drive didn't take so long - it somewhat killed the day. The guide was very informative, and we learned a lot about both castles. Chenonceau is truly gorgeous, and I could have spent all day there. The gardens are amazing, and I feel like we only scratched the surface of its history. Overall, it's a good tour and it gives you an idea of what to come back and visit again. Next time, I would rather rent a car, and go by ourselves - if only to avoid the long 3 hour, non-stop drive and to spend more time at the castles. Can't say enough great things about the tour company though - they were amazing, punctual, bus was clean and updated, and very informative.

Historic Prague Walking Tour including King's Route and Charles Bridge

Prague, Czech Republic

My Rating
1 star rating: I do not recommend this

My Review

Don't be fooled by the name of this tour - for the record, we learned nothing about the King's Route, and we didn't even walk across Charles Bridge. Overall, it was a decent walking tour of the city - we saw major buildings and got a good feel for the city, but we didn't learn much about the city's history. The tour was supposed to be in English - but the guide had to host two groups, one in German and the other in English. So, while we thought the tour would be entirely in English, we did the descriptions first in German, then English (not that big of a deal, but not what we paid for). The booth was very easy to find, but it wasn't very organized when we arrived. We were told to wait "over there" and a guide would come find us - well, we had to find the guide. We never made it across the river, saw Charles Bridge from a distance, and the King's Route was never, ever mentioned. I would have preferred to hire a private guide, or made our our walking tour armed with a map and a history guide of the city.

Ghent and Bruges Day Trip from Brussels

Brussels, Belgium

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

Great day. The driver picked us up at the hotel on time, and took us to another larger bus for the big tour. Our guide was very comical, and made the trip interesting. There were four translations on the trip out there, and throughout the walking tours, German, Spanish, English and Dutch(?). Definitely didn't get to spend enough time exploring either city, and both are definitely worth visiting again. It gave us a great taste for what to come back for and overall the day went very fast. Probably wouldn't do the tour again, but I am glad I went to see it for the first time as it gave a good general overview.
