Horse Racing at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Happy Valley

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

We walked to the designated hotel for a pickup to find the lobby full of eager racegoers all looking forward to a unique night and perhaps a small profit to brag about when they return home from their holiday.
Our guide gathered us and ushered us onto a bus bound for the Happy Valley racecourse. At the track we were guided through a door and into a lift which took us to the sixth floor of the members stand. Not quite dark but the illuminated course below and the brightly lit city buildings surrounding it took our breath away. A central screen dominated the centre of the course providing excellent viewing of the track and horses positions when racing.
Behind glass our table was positioned at the front of the dining room offering an excellent visual of all proceedings. Screens were also overhead showing many views of the track and made it possible to sit comfortably at the table to view races, but of course the excitement was outside on the decking when the horses were released from the starting stalls.
Cleverly planned, we were seated with six other Aussies, travellers and our country our common ground. All agreed the buffet meal provided was excellent and many visited the table several times. Wine and beer was included in the overall price and considering the number of patrons in this one of many dining rooms was chosen well and suited every palate. This trip also included a visit downstairs to the mounting yards and betting rings. We think this guided tour of the excellent Happy Valley racecourse is the best way to see this spectacle and allows entrance into the members stand and its facilities. The $30HK betting voucher is an added bonus and our successful bet from it provided ongoing betting for the rest of the night.
Hong Kong have used this prime piece of real estate very well, giving a nighttime sporting event twice a week and using the central area for tennis and soccer under lights. A good trip, highly recommended.

Private Chinese Tea Tasting with Tea Master

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

A little confusing when we arrived at the address provided for the Ming Cha Tea Shop in Taikoo, this is an industrial area and the building seems to be a warehouse with delivery trucks coming and going. A very helpful security guard could see our dilemma and escorts us to a tiny lift and said "12th floor, 12th floor".
Exiting the wobbly little lift we found ourselves in a small corridor with doors either side and a door at the end, a tiny sign revealed this is place we are to enjoy our private Chinese tea tasting with a Tea Master. The door opened and we met "Tomoko Ota" a diminutive Japanese woman who we discovered had been brought up in the Japanese tea district, Tomoko is our Tea Master and with a few well chosen questions discovered how scant our knowledge is in selecting, preparing and enjoying tea. The workshop to improve our skills begins.
Tomoko explained and showed us various tea areas, species and picking methods of the delicate tips to produce the varieties we see before us.
Tasting and smelling we quickly develop some preferences and it was time to learn the brewing techniques used to produce the perfect cup. At the end of the workshop and armed with our new found knowledge we ask if it is possible to make a purchase. With Tomoko's guidance we purchase the necessary teas and equipment to make sure our efforts back home in Australia are as close to perfect as tasted today. We really enjoyed this experience and Tomoko's company, and highly recommend it to other travellers.

Lantau Island and Giant Buddha Day Trip from Hong Kong

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Fantastic tour. Our guide and driver were locals from the Tai O Fishing Village, and were known by everyone. Their passion for the island and their ability to tell its story was enthralling . The day we were there the Giant Buddha was shrouded in cloud which made this amazing idol even more mystical. The island is covered with lush vegetation and a large population of cows abandoned by previous farmers, deer and water buffalo, they roam freely, all protected. The island is a paradise, and just across the water from Hong Kong, it's a "must do".

Hong Kong Island Half-Day Tour

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

A half day tour, helpful to get your bearings, but quite a lot of time and part of the tour was to a jewellery manufacturing business, not really our idea of seeing the sights. Fishing Village in the middle of the harbour, very interesting and the views from Victoria Peak were lovely.

Illuminated Rome Night Tour with Aperitivo

Rome, Italy

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

Our past visits to Rome included sightseeing during the day, and we were interested to see it at night. We started our walk in daylight, the lighting not visible, when darkness fell the illuminations were impressive, The Collosseum a stand out. The tour should start later.

Skip the Line: Uffizi Gallery and Vasari Corridor Walking Tour

Florence, Italy

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Having toured the Uffizi Gallery on a previous trip, we were mainly interested in the Vasari Corridor. However the tour guide had a different approach to showing us the Gallery and our previous knowledge has been enhanced. The Corridor is an engineering wonder, it's history " a must hear" and the art collection it holds "a must see".
