Rome Departure Shuttle Transfer: Hotel to Airport

Rome, Italy

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Our driver was a little grouchy but nonetheless very helpful. This transfer is a great alternative to taking the Leonardo Express train to FCO Airport. You basically pay for the ease and convenience. If you can afford it, I highly recommend it.

Rome Hop-on Hop-off Double Decker Bus Tour

Rome, Italy

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

Unfortunately, this turned out a waste of money for us. We ended up paying $35/person and using it only once in the 24-hour period.

When in Rome, as a tourist, you don't need transportation to get from one spot to the other. Unless you're incapable, you use your feet and walk! And if your destination is too far for you to walk in one shot, don't pay $35 for this bus... use the Metro subway and pay 1 euro for each trip or get a full day pass. But trust me, walking is more fun... if you don't plan to do some major walking, then Rome is not the place for you.

Think about this... you hop on this bus and hop off to one of its stops. From the stop, you go to your destination. Then you walk some more to go somewhere else. Then you walk some more. The next time you're ready to hop on again, the nearest stop for the bus is some walk away... and for the same distance of walking you are going to do to get to the nearest stop, you can walk to another tourist spot.

The only good thing about this is that the bus offers some very informative audio information/guide on very tourist spot it passes by, but to me still does not warrant $35/person.

Skip the Line: Vatican Museums Tickets

Rome, Italy

My Rating
4 star rating: Recommended

My Review

Note that you are skipping the long lines to the Vatican Museum only. The Skip the Line guide will not be there for you to skip the line at St. Peter's Basilica.

Anyway, if you plan to go to the museum, you would really want to skip the line. Imagine being in Disneyland waiting for a ride, Vatican Museum lines are like that, only 2x or 3x worse.

5-Day Best of Italy Trip

Rome, Italy

5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

My wife and I booked the Standard tour (hotel in Mestre instead of Venice) and it was well worth every penny we paid for. Mario, our tour guide, was corny at times (JK!) but overall very knowledgeable and fun, while Sabatino, our driver, was very good also. The Standard (cheaper) deal put us at a Hotel in Mestre so we had to commute to Venice on our own for the evening we were there. But it wasn't a problem at all because the bus stop to go to Venice is right in front of the hotel (Hotel Delfino). It only cost under 2 euros for the ride and took less than 10 minutes to get to Venice. It's worth not paying the extra $300 to get the hotel in Venice.

Don't be concerned that this trip does not include Pisa. I was bummed at first that it wasn't included but it turned out that it is an optional tour that they offer for 40 euros per person. Even at that price, it is still worth paying for. My only complaint was that during the trip to Pisa, much of the time was spent with the Pisa tour guide of the Baptistry and the Cathedral and we were only given about 30-40 mins free time to roam on our own and take pictures. That seems a lot of time but trust me, it isn't.

Anyway, if you're going on a trip to Italy for the first time, I highly recommend this tour. Not only do you get to see a lot of Italy, but it also takes away much of the planning headache in that you don't have to worry about booking hotels and worrying about transportation for a full five days!
