Kyoto Small-Group Bike Tour

My Review

Brad was a great leader and we saw some beautiful things. I liked the "philosopher's path" I think it is called because you see a bunch of little houses' backyards and lots of regular people living their daily lives. We saw a wedding photo session at a shrine. If there is any drawback it is that it was about 90 degrees and humid, but I forced myself to forget that I was soaking wet with sweat and to press on!

Kyoto and Nara 2-Day or 3-Day Rail Tour by Bullet Train from Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

My Review

Nara was something else, I really felt like I was far far away from reality. The deer park was amazing and fun. There were a ton of school kids there giggling and eating ice cream. Kyoto was out of this world, seeing the Imperial Palace and the 500 Buddha statues...now this is TOTALLY different than Europe! The Okura hotel will make you feel like a celebrity and has several great restaurants tucked in all over. It is also near a river with restaurants lining that all the way up and down. We had free time on the last day so we arranged a bike tour which was great and went to the mall! That was fun too since we got a foot massage and had a nice long lunch in the air conditioning. If I returned to Japan, it would not be in summer. Saw the back of a real geisha getting into a cab (the tour guide told me) and the Shinkansen made me wish the United States was this streamlined and organized. Worth every penny.

Tokyo by Night: Japanese Food Tour

My Review

Toshko was our tour guide, a young gal who took us to 2 restaurants and we got to ride the subway for the first time. We also saw the river at night, pretty nice. The second restaurant was a pancake type place where you make your own pancake type soufflé things from batter. One interesting part of this tour was the people we were with. A small group of a New Zealander, a professor and his wife, and me and my husband. We spent a lot of time talking with each other so that was interesting.

Tokyo Morning Tour: Meiji Shrine, Senso-ji Temple and Ginza Shopping District

My Review

Our guide spoke English well since she had studied in Canada. She gave a little humorous side to the shrines and temples ("when passing through the gate of a shrine, you are said to be cleansed, but some people have to go back and forth several times before they are clean enough to move forward...") which made it fun. It was our first day so we didn't mind sitting in the bus for 30 minutes to get to the starting point, we just people watched all the little kids going to school, people on foot, etc. We had a little free time at Asakusa Buddhist Temple which was fun. Bring snacks with you as you have little time to sit and have a coffee, etc. We saw 3 things that morning, including the Imperial Palace which was super cool because we heard the guards practicing their martial arts behind a fence and could see them jumping high and shouting, etc.
