Ghost and Mystery Walking Tour of Rome
Tour / Activity
Location: Rome, Italy
My Review: My partner and I attended the Dark Rome walking tour on our 2nd night in Rome to get our bearings and learn some of the history. First up, I recommend you ignore any negative reviews complaining that this wasn't a "Ghost tour" as per their expectations. I consider this the unfortunate result of ignorant, uninformed tourists who did not do their research nor were able to appreciate the difference in cultural definitions. Yes the supernatural stories and information are more "folklore / urban legend" based and is not technically a "ghost-hunt", but when you consider the religious beliefs and background of your location, can you really expect a "Most Haunted" or "Ghost Adventure" style tour of ghost-story information? Now with that out of the way, I can actually admit that I was after such a tour, but after doing my research, understanding the context, and still seeing the positive reviews, we decided to give it a shot. And I'm glad we did Massimo was an amazing guide. He ensured the night was well paced, was very flamboyant with his story-telling, quick wit and kept everyone engaged. The history on some of Rome's more macabre sites would definitely be an eye-opener to the uninitiated and demonstrates a different view to the typical Rome tourist front. I am not a history buff by any stretch, but after just a taste of the "real" Rome and what it was like during the Dark Ages period, I just had to learn more and researched the sites we visited after the tour. Again be warned that the tour does not finish where it starts, will most likely finish somewhere between 11:30pm-12am and places to "sit" during stops are rare, so be prepared for a lot of walking and ensure you are well rested beforehand. Additionally, other "official" walking tours we participated in generally used audio headsets so we could hear the guide through their microphone. If you are expecting this then be aware it'll only be the guide projecting their voice across the group. In reality given that the walking tour is not always within heavily populated areas (and being at night is typically less crowded anyway), this was not such a hassle. All in all, thoroughly recommend this tour if the above suits your expectations :-)
