I took two teenagers on this tour of cold war Berlin (in 31 degree heat!), which I thought might lead to a few moans from them. On the contrary, our guide, Barnaby, was so knowledgeable, entertaining and enthusiastic about all sides of Berlin that both my teenagers voted this one of their top highlights of the visit. We all came away, feeling that we understood the rise and fall of East Germany much better than before the tour. Barnaby looked after us well too, keeping to shady areas where possible and making sure everyone was ok at all times. A fund of anecdotes really brought the history and politics to life. The old Stasi building was very atmospheric, as was the deserted building next to the old US embassy and the Tranenpalast.
This was a fascinating tour of a part of Berlin we would not have seen otherwise. Our guide, Henry, was brilliant - enthusiastic, knowledgeable and with a fund of stories. Both my teenagers loved it and we all got a real feel for how it must have been to try and shelter underground from the bombs overhead. The nuclear section was great too - chilling and fascinating in turn. So glad we decided to do this. Only proviso - we found the start difficult to find. There are signs but not very big so leave 5 minutes spare to locate the tour office.
