The National Christmas Tree
Washington DC
My Recommendation Tip
In 1923, the 1st Lady Grace Coolidge, wife of President Calvin Coolidge, would start the tradition of the lighting the National Christmas Tree at the White House in Washington DC. On Christmas Eve of 1923, the first tree was a 48 ft. Balsam Fir from Coolidge’s native state of Vermont, lit on the south side of the White House area called the Ellipse. Today the tree is a 26 ft. evergreen from New Jersey that replaced the 40 ft. Colorado blue spruce that blew down last February.

National Mall in Washington DC
Washington DC
My Recommendation Tip
The National Mall is the open green space between the U S Capitol and the Washington Monument. Four rows of elm trees line either side that are in front of the Smithsonian Museums, East and West National Galleries and Sculpture Garden, and the U S Department of Agriculture Administration Building.
