Paihia or Russell, Bay of Islands, New Zealand
On March 29, 2013 our cruise ship arrived at the Paihia Wharf. After taking the ferry to Russell Wharf, we boarded the R. Tucker Thompson for a wonderful day. The morning started out cool so the scones with strawberry jam along with tea or coffee was a welcome treat. Those who wanted to be involved raised and lowered the sails and took the helm to steer the ship. After taking a dinghy to one of the islands, we returned to the aroma of BBQ. One of the hands on board had made BBQ chicken, potato salad, and a green salad, which was served with some delicious bread. Liquid refreshment was available for purchase. There was opportunity to climb the mast (tethered of course) and swim if we desired. I booked my trip through Viator and not only enjoyed my cruise, but realized it benefited a not -for-profit trust that takes young people on a weeks sailing voyage, which helps them develop confidence, leadership and teamwork. A great time and the opportunity to help others. What more could you ask....and reasonable too?
Your coaches were better than in Stavanger, but the trip through town with it's history was boring. Would rather have enjoyed the little train tour in town and done some shopping..
Everything was close to the ship and this was a waste of money. It was raining. Was in an open coach with water on the seats and water streaming in the makeshift roof like a waterfall. A fight broke out on my coach due to the conditions. A man kept yelling it is unfair. Interesting, but could not enjoy due to the puddles of water on the seats and the driving rain.
We were disappointed in the Exhibit itself, expecting more "flowers". Finally found the section and enjoyed it thoroughly. this was a good trip - the trip up and back was fun too. Again it poured rain, but the site was spectacular. We really liked the tour to the Hague, the windmills, wooden shoes, Delft. the little miniature town. You didn't ask me about that tour.
