The half day tour I booked for was on a Monday, but I was contacted to be told that the date was to be changed to Saturday, which was not suitable and so I was scheduled for a Tuesday tour. Although no one told us so, it turned out that we had been put on a full day tour with a Russian group which also included a visit to a winery/olive pressing plant and an hour or so in Heraklion. Luckily, we had the time to accommodate this change, but I think we should have been told about it. Having said that, our English speaking guide at Knossos was excellent and we enjoyed the day.
We had to be ready for this tour at 7.30am and then, having done very few further pickups, waited on the bus until well after 9.00am before the tour started. We then saw a little of the city and spent some time at the Olympic stadium, arriving at the Acropolis just at the same time as a huge cruise liner contingent. There were about forty members in our group and the guide did not wait for us all to assemble before she began to speak. Further, she could not be heard unless you happened to be standing quite close and in front of her. It would have been so much better if we had been taken to the Acropolis first, or after the visit to the museum, which would then explain what we were about to see. Half an hour later, the queues at the Acropolis had gone and a visit then would have been much more enjoyable and informative. Surely the tour company should know when the cruise liner tours take place.
This tour was excellent. We were members of a small group and our guide was charming and well informed. We had a most enjoyable lunch where all the dishes were explained and, despite the sales pitch, the visit to the carpet factory was an interesting experience.
There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing before this trip finally got underway. The commentary on the boat could not be heard, but the guide was aware of that and tried, not very successfully, to rectify the situation.
