'An Evening at Charlottenburg Palace' Dinner and Concert by the Berlin Residence Orchestra

Berlin, Germany

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Our dinner was wonderful. Starter: diced, marinated salmon with shallots confit, cucumber gazpacho and mesculun herbs; entree: roasted lamb loin with eggplant caviar on zucchini and potato ragout; dessert: cassis dome with ricotta and pistachio. Drinks (tea, coffee, wine, sparking water) cost extra. The concert was fantastic. There is an intermission to get drinks, visit the WC, walk outside for some fresh air, buy souvenirs in the small shop. The opera singers (Ms Puzak and Mr Richter) were brilliant. The equally brilliant musicians performed pieces from Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart, Quantz, and Boccherini--a truly enjoyable concert.

Hard Rock Cafe Berlin

Berlin, Germany

My Rating
2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better

My Review

The restaurant is nice though the food we received that day (July 4 lunch) was overcooked. We paid for the Diamond Menu option. The barbeque chicken that my companion had was overcooked and dry, the full rack of ribs that I ordered was overcooked and leathery and the cheeseburger that my other companion had was dry. The chicken and ribs (the parts that weren't covered with sauce) were almost black and they weren't saved by the barbeque sauce that was liberally slathered over the meats. There are so many other better places to eat (eg Ka De We food emporium) that I would not recommend this place. The ice cream sundae and the starter salads were the only things from our menu that was okay, but then you don't need to cook ice cream or lettuce. Go and get the Hard Rock souvenirs if you want, but give the food a pass.

Dresden Day Trip from Berlin

Berlin, Germany

My Rating
5 star rating: Highly Recommended

My Review

Our English speaking guide was Naomi and she was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The bus (which doesn't have a toilet on board) makes a WC stop on the way to Dresden at a very clean and nice rest stop where you can buy hot foods, snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. The drive is rather long, but at Dresden, Naomi takes the group to the WC at a museum before embarking on a walking tour lasting 90-120 minutes. Dresden has a rich history and it is very beautiful. There is time to have lunch at a cafe, restaurant or a fast food establishment after the walking tour. On the bus ride back (be sure to use the toilet before getting on the bus as the bus doesn't stop on the return trip), Naomi talked to everyone who was still awake and this personal touch was what made the tour complete. She gave people recommendations on what to see back in Berlin, U-Bahn directions on how to get to various restaurants, and showed a genuine interest in the lives of the tour group members. She was very friendly and easy to talk to. We arrived back in Berlin about 6:30 pm.

Potsdam Half-Day Trip from Berlin

Berlin, Germany

My Review

The ride to Potsdam is on a double decker bus. This is an audio tour where everyone is given earbuds to listen to the commentary (multiple languages available). There is no tour guide just the driver. There were long spells of silence in the audio which was the only drawback. Would have liked more information of the sights on the ride to Potsdam. We sat in the upper deck and it was HOT. The driver had retracted the roof so the sun was really hot the entire way to Potsdam. Felt like 29 degrees C (84 F). If it is not too hot, the upper deck would be great otherwise bring a hat and sunglasses in the summer. On the return ride to Berlin, we sat on the lower deck where it was air conditioned. We were given ample time to explore the majestic grounds of the Sanssoucci Palace in Potsdam. The sculptures, fountains, and vine covered trellises are breathtaking. Go to the windmill across the street and buy a loaf of the Windmill Bread (Windmuhlenbrot) to take back to your hotel. Slice the bread and it is delicious with butter. Spread on some strawberry (erdbeere) or raspberry (himbeere) jam and you have a satisfying breakfast. The city is so nice that it is worth spending more time there.
